Hi,
Unfortunately due to what looks like a kernel bug, sol.bitfolk.com
has got stuck in a state where VPSes cannot be booted. I therefore
need to reboot it as a matter of urgency, so those with VPSes hosted
on sol are shortly going to see a clean shutdown and boot.
I apologise for the disruption and I hope to be able to give more
information later. I will follow up again when all customr VPSes
are known to have booted.
Cheers,
Andy

Hi,
Our colo provider had scheduled some routine maintenance for this
evening which was supposed to be non-disruptive, but it appears that
something went wrong and so as of about 2331 there have been
intermittent network issues.
They are aware of it and are busy working on it. I will follow up
again when there is more info and/or resolution.
Apologies for the disruption.
Cheers,
Andy

Hi,
Google are shutting down their Checkout payment platform as of 20th
November 2013, so BitFolk will stop accepting payments that way
around 12th November.
As you may be aware if you are following the other list¹, credit card
payments are now available.
I suggest that refugees from Google Checkout pay by this means in
future, and it would be great if everyone else paying by anything
other than Direct Debit would consider it also.
The initial implementation requires you to input card details every
time and I do understand that is a major usability downside, so we
will improve that as soon as we can to have storage and continuous
authority as *options*.
The credit card payments are going through https://stripe.com/ with
the card details being passed between your browser and Stripe using
JavaScript. All BitFolk gets is a unique token that we use with
Stripe to kick off the payment, so we're not seeing or storing your
card details at any point.
Here's some more info about payment methods that are supported:
https://tools.bitfolk.com/wiki/Payment_methods
Cheers,
Andy

Hi,
Previously it was noted that kernels compressed with XZ are not
supported:
http://lists.bitfolk.com/lurker/message/20130523.110244.f70b2d77.en.html
As far as I am ware this only affected people trying to run Debian
jessie (testing) since that was the only distribution I know of that
switched to XZ for kernel compression.
I have now added support for XZ compression and it has been tested a
little by myself and a few other customers, so it should now be
working. If you are doing a dist-upgrade from wheezy then it may
still be wise to keep the wheezy kernel around in case of problems.
Also Debian jessie seems to work now as a net install; previously it
was missing a netboot Xen installer and the XZ kernel support also.
Please bear in mind that Debian jessie is an unreleased testing
branch and may break at any time for reasons beyond our control. I
would be interested to know if it is broken at any time, but can't
promise speedy fix.
Cheers,
Andy

Hi,
sol.bitfolk.com just stopped responding, and being unable to get any
response from serial console I had to power cycle it. It has now
booted and I am having a look around for any ideas as to why it
locked up, before attempting to restart any customer VPSes.
Thanks for your patience.
Cheers,
Andy

Hi,
A request was made for Arch Linux so I had a go at installing it via
the rescue VPS, and was apparently successful. Here is a write-up of
it:
https://tools.bitfolk.com/wiki/Arch
I have never in my life used Arch Linux before so this might not be
the best way and it might suffer from bit-rot over time.
If there are any Arch enthusiasts interested in maintaining that
article then we can perhaps come to some discount arrangement.
In any case, corrections are welcome.

Andy

Hi,
From 1st September we are increasing the inclusive data transfer
allowance of the base VPS from 300GB per month to 400GB per month.
Those of you who were paying for extra data transfer above 300GB
per month may wish to check if you want to reduce your commitment.
If so you should contact support(a)bitfolk.com before your next
renewal.
Cheers,
Andy

Hello,
This is probably only of interest to the tiny minority of you who
pay by cheque.
BitFolk has changed postal address. You can find the new address at:
https://bitfolk.com/contact.html
and on invoices raised from this point onwards.

Hi,
We've had a couple of reports of apt-cacher problems and have also
reproduced this. They look like this:
W: Failed to fetch http://apt-cacher.lon.bitfolk.com/debian/security.debian.org/dists/squeeze/… Hash Sum mismatch
upon an apt-get update.
I'm still investigating as to whether this is a problem with
apt-cacher or the source mirrors, but disabling use of apt-cacher
does allow it to work for now.
So if you are desperate to do an update, you can remove the
"apt-cacher.lon.bitfolk.com/debian/" text from each URL and it
should work.
Cheers,
Andy
