Hi,
Continued use of Twitter has become untenable so I will move
"bitfolk" on Twitter to a Fediverse ("Mastodon") instance. The
question is which one?
It's difficult to say which instance will end up being "the one", seeing
all of them are effectively run by people like ourselves (because we
can). Some instances allows users to pitch in either technically with
admin or moderation tasks, or accept donations to help with costs. Most
don't, so I don't see how a lot of them will continue existing past the
first year or two. Thankfully Mastodon allows you to move between
instances and also take your followers with you (I might be talking
b****cks here, but I'm reasonably sure I read that somewhere) which can
help if your instance develops the wobblies. I plan to run my own
instance purely because I can (I'm a sucker for punishment), but until
such a time I am here:
@dotslash@home.social
The current Twitter account doesn't see much use
but it's probably
of most use for posting about current incidents and maintenance
work. Therefore it needs to work even if BitFolk is not working. So
it should not run on an instance that's inside BitFolk
infrastructure.
Right, understood. With this in mind I would suggest that you choose a
server that is backed by an Org rather than a private individual. The
central "index" server has filters to look up such instances here:
https://joinmastodon.org/servers
A good example of an instance that is backed by an Org (and also accepts
donations via Kofi etc) would be Mastodonapp.uk:
https://mastodonapp.uk/about
Please note that I'm not endorsing this instance, I'm just pointing it
out as an instance that seems to have good future surviveability. I wish
I used such care to select home.social as my instance, but hey - I
wanted to get rid of Twitter. :-)

¹ This is a Mastodon instance running at bitfolk but I don't have
any intention of opening this to other users, as I don't think I'm
prepared for the workload of managing such a user community.
This is fine, but as you mentioned it's probably better to run the
official Bitfolk account externally on a big(ish) instance that looks
well run and funded.
