I'm a fairly heavy Discord user and if there was a Bitfolk discord server I'd certainly join it, I'd likely also be willing to help admin it if that was needed. Whether it would attract a critical mass of users though is probably only something you would discover by trying it.
I used to use IRC a lot, but rarely use it these days mainly because I've yet to find a good, user friendly and free solution for my phone.
The other place I engaged in occasional tech chat is Telegram and if there was a Bitfolk Telegram channel I'd join that as well, but on the whole I prefer Discord.
It is easy to setup a Telegram bot and send automated alerts to it though (I do this with a private channel for my own monitoring) so that might be a low cost way of setting up another channel for service alerts rather than chat, though again how many people would use it is anybodies guess.
Personally I've experimented with Twitter and Mastodon and given up on both of them, but each to their own.

I've been on Discord for several years and like it. It's a lot like a modern IRC — I once saw IRC described as "Discord for old people" 🙂
I'd be happy to set up a server if there's a demand, but I've no idea if there would be.

I don't know whether this is a general lack of interest in chat in
the bitfolk user community, or if it is a reflection of declining
popularity of IRC. If the former then there's little to be done,

I had a look at Discord but couldn't really get my head around it.
If there's some experienced Discord user who thinks a BitFolk
Discord would have a user base, I'm open to endorsing it on a
similar basis to the Reddit thing.
Is there some other protocol that people use for IRC-like things? I
would have to give a hard No to Slack, but I'm interested in hearing
about other things.
