It seems to have been some sort of kernel driver bug in the
Ethernet module as it was "stuck" not passing traffic but the
interface still showed as up.

in light of doing away with bonding being the
direction we are already
going, I don't think I want to alter how bonding is done on what will
soon be a legacy setup.
Just an update to say that we've now completed moving away from bonded
interfaces to a BGP setup with a session for each interface. The
majority of the servers also got 25GE network interfaces, so the problem
1GE interfaces here on "jack" are no longer primarily in use (for now
they are a backup).
I wanted to get that work out of the way before starting on a project to
refresh hardware, which will come with an upgrade in VM specs but
unfortunately also a migration for all customers between hosts as we do
rolling upgrades.
Although there are two new servers ready for us to work with I expect
the whole thing to take many months and I will talk more about it on the
"users" mailing list.
Thanks,
Andy
