I recently got pointed in the direction of Sublime Text:

I have found it to be an absolutely superb programmer's editor.
(GUI-based, I should point out).
It is nagware, but the nag screen doesn't pop up all that often
and I have come to the conclusion that it's well worth ~40 quid.
(The "evaluation" period is indefinite).
I'll be buying a licence as soon as the Round Tuit becomes available.
