Hi everyone,
I'm experiencing some strange network drops (or perhaps "pauses") on my
VPS. Network traffic seems to be stopped for a few seconds (~15-30 secs)
These seem to happen every few minutes. This seems to have started over the
last couple of days and affect all network traffic AFAICT. (Certainly HTTP
and SSH are disrupted.) There's no loading issues or memory issues that I
can see.
Has anyone else been experiencing similar? Next step is to run tcpdump to
"capture" one of these pauses.

Data point - I have noticed my IMAP sessions started breaking
today...not looked into why yet, too busy.

Same here. Timeouts, huge ping latency and then everything normal again. And
then timeout... fafa.
At first I tought it's because of my location (Estonia), but now...

Have you tried running top in another SSH session to see if there’s a CPU/memory spike at
those times? It might also be worth connecting one SSH session to the console, and seeing
if you get the same delays then. Try pinging out to google.com from the console, and see
if the ping gets affected by these ‘pauses’.

Won't help -- *everything* stops. All connections hang up in the
same way at the same time, so we won't see the top output.
It might also be worth connecting one SSH session to
the console,

Yes, I have. I don't see my pauses "every few minutes", but I don't
necessarily use it that heavily that I'd notice. I've seen it happen
for quite some time -- just haven't had the time to investigate any
further.
I'm running Debian stable, and I'm on corona.

I'm also on obstler, but haven't noticed anything like this. I've been
connected to IMAP all day, and have been playing with SSH recently to see if
I can invoke a 'pause', but nothing. I'm running CentOS on my VPS though,
not Debian...

server; there doesn't appear to be any break in the data.

Yes. It's been quite frustrating, although doesn't appear to actually
interrupt any running connections, only temporarily stop traffic for
the duration so it could be a lot worse.

Update: That packet loss shows up on destinations in Manchester,
Minnesota, and other places that start with the letter "M". So, not
Bitfolk-specific.

I don't know whether this is happening on other things on the network, as I'm
rarely SSH'd into them, but with torpor I regularly am SSH'd into it (pretty

Oh, and I've seen it from work too - where we use BT/Zen/Demon - though we've
been having major problems with the Zen line and SSH anyway (We've got some
weird firewall in place that decides to cut off the connection to SSH servers or
SSL servers at random intervals)

I can't say I've noticed any problems, and I'm SSH'd in almost
constantly. My host is i.je and I think it's on kwak.
At this point, I will suggest http://f8lure.mouselike.org/
It pings once per second and monitors min/avg/max/loss so it might be
quite useful for those of you seeing problems.
