Hi, folks,
Any suggestions for a reliable monitoring service?
The people at Pingdom appear to spend all their time on their blog. At least half of the
alerts I get from them are false positives - though not always as hilarious as this one.

Hey Graham,
I have been using monitis.com for a good while now. More for monitoring web
pages then servers themselves. I have found them quite good. They have
server monitoring as well but I haven't had time to set it up yet.

I honestly use bytemark's watchdog to monitor my bitfolk machine and others.

Hi Graham,
After a trial of Pingdom, I ended up going with Panopta for our
monitoring at work - they were a bit cheaper but more importantly for me
much more flexible in the way you set up the reporting (you can say
exactly who receives a notification, by what method and when).
Only false positives I've had were when I forgot to define a maintenance
window when taking the server down (which of course isn't a false
positive :)

I've just started to use binarycanary.com and would recommend them on the
basis of the last few weeks at least!

I use collectd[1] for grabbing monitoring data from all my servers;
and then using some perl to check the values in the rrd files (on the
collectd server) and tigger alerts as required.
Pingdom allowing one free check, use them to monitor my monitoring.

Hi Graham,
I've been using the free service at http://siteuptime.com for a number of
years now and have found it extremely reliable, with the caveat that I've
not had much downtime hence not really tested it all that much - but on
all the occasions I've known about it has not failed to report.
The free service only covers the one server, but more enhanced packages
are available at a cost. Being a personal server I didn't need the bells
and whistles of the costed packages, and instead used an e-mail-to-sms
gateway to provide text alerts for example.
