Hi Graham,
I've been using the free service at http://siteuptime.com for a number of
years now and have found it extremely reliable, with the caveat that I've
not had much downtime hence not really tested it all that much - but on
all the occasions I've known about it has not failed to report.
The free service only covers the one server, but more enhanced packages
are available at a cost. Being a personal server I didn't need the bells
and whistles of the costed packages, and instead used an e-mail-to-sms
gateway to provide text alerts for example.

least half of the alerts I get from them are false positives - though not
always as hilarious as this one.
