You'd be much better off installing a webmail service on your mail server.
Squirrelmail works well straight out of the box and, being IMAP based,
provides complete access for all your users to all of their mail, sent and
received, using whatever client they wish and webmail too.
Mail backup can then of course be included as part of your usual backup
strategy.
Downside: you need to trust Google with your emails.
