Hi Guys,
I've recently come into possession of a relatively small hosting
company and I'm trying to move the ~15 or so domains to Bitfolk, the
set up they have now is as follows:
-1 server with 5 IP addresses
-A main domain name registered with GoDaddy, with an NS1 host and NS1
A record pointing to one of the IP addresses, and an NS2 host and A
record pointing to another IP address
All the domains they host are then pointed to ns1 and ns2 on the main
domain via nameservers.
I think I need to just move the main domain, but will I need two IP
addresses for this or can ns1 and ns2 point to the same IP?

This sounds like they're using just one machine to provide both primary
and backup domain servers. This is a Bad Idea(TM). The whole idea of
having two is so that if one goes tits up the other will still be working.
I'm not sure whether Andy provides secondary DNS services, but if he
doesn't then it can be had very reasonably from other providers. You
can set your VPS up as the primary DNS, and have someone else slave off
it for the secondaries. Then you inform your registrar of the change of
DNS servers and it should just flow.

Daniel,
Andy does provide backup DNS servers. You should definitely take advantage
of this.

How would I take advantage of that? Should I send (other) Andy a
support request about it? I assume after it is set up, he will then
give me the IP address of the secondary server which I can then set as
ns2?

Got to a point and now I'm slightly confused (might have something to
do with it being midnight)
I have bind9 installed on the server now and I am not sure what to do
next...I assume I want the ns1 host to point at my VPS, then the VPS
should handle any incoming domain requests? Do I just need to add an
NS record for NS1 on the VPS now?

When you say "the server", what do you mean?
If you have 15 domains and the first of their nameservers currently
points to an IP address on a server that you're going to keep, then
surely all you need to do is provide some more nameservers for these
domains, yes?
Or are you planning to decommission the server that currently hosts
the DNS for all these domains?

Okay, so what I would do is:
1) Set up a nameserver on your VPS and load the 15 zones into it.
2) Check it actually serves them as you require.
3) Put in a support ticket asking for BitFolk to provide secondary
name service for these 15 zones that are on your VPS.
4) Once the ticket has been responded to as completed, check that
the zones are actually being served by all BitFolk secondary
servers.
5) Change the registrar records for all zones so that the BitFolk
secondary servers (and optionally your VPS's nameserver IP) are
the only nameservers specified.
6) Verify that the nameserver on your old server is now receiving no
traffic.
7) Decommission your original server (or the nameservers on it).
Bear in mind that between steps (4) and (5), the old nameserver set
will still be served for up to the TTL of the NS records in the
zones and the TTL of the top level domain (com/net/org/etc) in each
case.

I'd use tools like dig to check that the correct records are being
served by each server, e.g.:

If you're planning to run authoritative DNS for production domains
you'll need to know how to debug it.

Do godaddy not provide reliable DNS management with the domain then?
(genuine question, I don't use them)

They provide fairly good DNS hosting. However the clients are the ones
who buy the domains and point them to our nameservers, so obviously I
can't start modifying there domain records.
