Hi all,
I was looking to upgrade my VPS to the latest Ubuntu release this afternoon but ran across
a problem. Whenever I try to run "do-release-upgrade” I receive the following
error:
Checking for a new Ubuntu release

this looks like it could be a problem with the xenial.tar.gz file on the local repo cache.
Has anyone else had similar problems, and if so, how did you resolve them?
I suppose beyond that, has anyone successfully upgraded their Ubuntu VPS to 16.04? Were
there any problems along the way?

If you edit your /etc/apt/sources.list to remove all mention of
apt-cacher.lon.bitfolk.com and do an apt-get update, does the
problem go away?
i.e. if the file currently says:
deb http://apt-cacher.lon.bitfolk.com/ubuntu/gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ trusty main
then change it to:
deb http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ trusty main
Or, with sed:
# sed -i.bak 's#http://apt-cacher.lon.bitfolk.com/ubuntu#http://#'
to edit it in-place storing a backup as /etc/apt/sources.list.bak.
If that works, then BitFolk's apt-cacher has somehow cached a bad
file. I will be able to fix it by deleting the file from our cache.
If it doesn't work then the file on the mirror is (still) bad and
Ubuntu will have to fix it.

Hi,
I'm resurecting this thread because I've just had an idetical issue and
after some searching found Andy's post below on the bitfolk lurker
archive.
I can't see any follow up posts so I just thought I'd let you know that
following Andy's suggestion to edit source.list seems to have fixed the
issue for me and I've now managed to run the upgrade.
So it looks like the problem was with the BitFolk's apt-cacher.

huge problems with more normal HTTP proxies like squid.
Anyway, I have now reconfigured BitFolk's apt-cacher-ng instances to
not cache any URI like:
/dist-upgrader-all/.*\.tar.\gz$
so now none of these files will be found in cache; they will always
be downloaded from the real mirror each time.
(There are tons of other tar.gz files in the cache and they all work
fine, otherwise we'd see hash mismatches there too.)

am probably 2 to 3 times older than most of the others but the great
thing about CF is that all the exercises can be 'scaled' (adapted) to
suit age or ability. There is a big emphasis on community plus
proper one to one coaching unlike traditional gyms I have been to.

If you don't mind the trek, we have monthly meets with talks (most of
the time, if I can manage to find speakers now it is down to me) in
Portsmouth (http://portsmouth.lug.org.uk/). HantsLUG has ended up in
limbo meetings wise, but Portsmouth is still going strong (largely
thanks to Lisi, and I am trying to keep up her good work).
Meets are on the third Saturday of the month between 1pm and 6pm (talks
generally about 3pm) within staggering distance of Hilsea station (well
Hilsea Halt as I've always known it) and with easy access from the A27.
This month (next Saturday) we have a talk on Node-RED. We are very
traditional with the bring-a-box style rather than pubs, and that is
attracting people from as far as Horsham, Worthing and IoW - small but
perfectly formed?! Stay as long or as little as you like. Bar that last
bit that was all on the website, but there you go :-)
I have to say I'm Ubuntu too, more pragmatic and easier to 'sell' to
customers as they're more likely to have heard of the name. There's a
chance the switch to Gnome will change that for my desktops, although
I'll probably end up with Ubuntu MATE.

Hi Paul, thanks for inviting me but Portsmouth is about twice as far as
I am happy driving these days. Age is catching up with me, although I am
reasonably fit, but the stress of driving is a bit much and it really
tires me out.
I have to say I'm Ubuntu too, more pragmatic and

I disliked it immensely when Debian changed to Gnome2 and very quickly
looked for alternatives, finally settled on the MATE desktop. I
don't get on with tablets or smartphones so the traditional mouse
+keyboard style will see me out. I like to have applications running
each own workspace so generally set the desktop up with half a dozen.
I seem to recall you (and others) having umpteen terminals running in
a window but never got on with that, wasn't the greatest user of the
command line although I think some things are better done that way, I
don't use synaptic for example but instead do daily aptitude update &
aptitude safe-upgrade (I am running Sid after all).

I was all grumpy when debian started Gnome2 stuff. I was using icewm at
the time and was quite happy with it.
I settled for xfce4, which seems pretty focused on just-work rather
than be-fancy.
It sort of puts me in the last-gen section at work, but so what, I
don't need to troubleshoot my debian machine ever, it just works.
The ubuntu kids seem to spend more time working around apparmor,
upstart and whatever nonsense ubuntu comes up with...

Whether it's due to a bug in the metadata generation or some other
unsynchronized change between packages and the release files, I think
it's actually a repo problem. Simply waiting a while or using another
upstream repo has fixed it for me in an emergency, but that's unlikely
to be practical for you I guess.
