I've done a number of new installs and upgrades from jessie→stretch
in the months leading up to the release and they've all been
uneventful.
As usual it really depends on the packages installed as some will
have incompatible new configurations.
A big one in the wheezy→jessie upgrade was the move from apache 2.2
to 2.4 because the authorization config completely changed and
unless you rewrote your configs you ended up with "permission
denied" on basically everything.
So, those are the sorts of gotchas I think we are wanting to hear
about, if anyone has any. :)
When I get a spare moment I will update the Xen Shell to show
stretch as stable and add an installer for the new testing (buster).

What's put me off doing it is that PHP is now PHP7, and that breaks the
PHP5 way of doing some things in a few cases, one of which affects
something I have.

this thread.
If you mean wheezy (7.x) to stretch then that isn't supported in one
step. You would need to go from wheezy to jessie and then jessie to
stretch.
I have done a bunch of upgrades from wheezy to jessie and as
mentioned the only tricky part were the changes needed to apache
configuration.

That was what I expected, but I'd hoped there was a direct path from 7.x to
9.0

etch→squeeze→wheezy→jessie. It wasn't too difficult, you can just
keep going with the cycle of:
1. Alter /etc/apt/sources.list to name the next release
2. apt-get update
3. apt-get dist-upgrade
It tells you when you need to reboot into a newer kernel, otherwise
you can keep going.
I'll have to deal with the upgrade soon then.
When the thing you're upgrading to is no longer on the main mirrors
it becomes a bit more tricky as you have to point to
snapshot.debian.net or archive.debian.org.

debian. I'll make sure I have a decent (tested) backup before I start.
