Thanks for the info - it's been a while since I did a dist-upgrade on debian. I'll make sure I have a decent (tested) backup before I start.

I recently did a couple of etch to jessie upgrades by going
etch→squeeze→wheezy→jessie. It wasn't too difficult, you can just
keep going with the cycle of:

1. Alter /etc/apt/sources.list to name the next release

2. apt-get update

3. apt-get dist-upgrade

It tells you when you need to reboot into a newer kernel, otherwise
you can keep going.

When the thing you're upgrading to is no longer on the main mirrors
it becomes a bit more tricky as you have to point to
snapshot.debian.net or archive.debian.org.
