I seem to recall some discussion about Mastodon on here a while ago. I'd
appreciate guidance about using a Bitfolk VPS for a multi-user Mastodon
instance.
Specifically, I'm trying to get an idea of how much RAM and storage we'd
need for say, 50 or 100 users.

bandwidth use.

How many Mastodon users are there globally? It sounds like it wouldn't
run on a laptop without mains for a long time...
Don't want to seem too negative as there aren't many alternatives. It
sounds terrible for global warming though - there has to be a
alternative than this.
Is it just the search that takes up memory? Where's the 20-30% of the
CPU going, it can't be serving that many requests for that number of
users, or does it burn because of federation? Maybe these are answered
questions already if I just went and looked at their issue tracker...

If that is your environment I expect there are alternative
implementations of a fediverse server that would be more suitable.

The full text search is elasticsearch and the web app is ruby on
rails, neither of which are known for being light on resources.
<controversial opinion>
The good news is that the vast majority of resources in the world
are used by capitalism to market and sell things that no one needs,
so I wouldn't personally worry about a few thousand elasticsearch
instances indexing the text of a few million humans. All the largest
IT corporations in the world are data mining and advertising
operations, which is not the direction that Fediverse is going.

I think the worst resource problem that Fediverse servers have at
the moment is the way that they all stampede to download any link
that is posted, because they don't share the metadata amongst
themselves. I expect they will fix it eventually though.

I had an idea that Mastodon was resource intensive, but that sounds like it would need
more than we'd want to spend.

There are services that will host it, not sure if they end up being cheaper
than the hetzner server.
e.g. https://masto.host/ I am sure there are EU and UK providers. I have
never used them.

I don't think you'll really find that cost effective at BitFolk,
unfortunately. The main issue will be the amount of RAM needed.
Since it doesn't really send email and is perhaps not mission
critical I might be tempted to rent a Hetzner server for something
like that.
You'll probably want to have the storage backed by S3 or compatible
from the beginning, so it's cheaper.
