There's two aspects to this that your current hosting provider may
be covering for you:
- The registration/renewal of the domain name
- The serving of DNS records for your domain
Every domain needs a registrar, so you need to work out what you are
going to do there. Here are some notes about domain name registrars
that customers have compiled:

Your existing host may also be doing the DNS for you. The bit where
you insert records into your domain that points hosts at IP
addresses and things like that.
You can run the DNS yourself if you like - run a DNS server on your
VPS, get at least one more secondary DNS server from somewhere.
BitFolk will provide up to three for free:

The main downside to that might be that you may currently have no
experience of setting up and operating a DNS server. It's not hard,
but it is something new to learn.
There are also plenty of free DNS providers like
afraid.org. I have
no experience of them but presumably there is at least one that
doesn't suck and does provide a simple web interface to managing
your DNS.
So, those are your options, you can compare these to the costs of
keeping your current arrangement for domain name renewal and DNS
management.
Cheers,
Andy
