You will need both! As a stop-gap, typing 'mail' should allow you direct,
There are two components to a typical mail server.

additional software such as dovecot.

OK, I'll take a look at dovecot. At the minute, 'mail' just tells me
'no new mail for julian', which isn't that helpful!
