Younger generation are all on phones and apps, too, so WhatsApp (which
I've recently had to get used to because of another community that's
using it a lot) and Tik Tok and Snapchat. The latter two are quite
different and no substitute for this list, but they are where the kids
are as far as I know.
I'm quite happy with email, myself. And in text mode, with (neo)mutt!

Yes, there's a multitude of separate web based forums, though Reddit seems a
closer equivalent to the newsgroups world, with it huge diversity of
topics all under one roof.
