Hi,
This mail is about BitFolk's customer chat which is currently the
IRC channel #BitFolk on Libera, and maybe expanding it to other
chat platforms. If that doesn't interest you then you can safely
just ignore this email.
I realised recently that despite there being around 45 actual people
present in BitFolk's customer chat, for a while now it's been
basically silent.
I'm prepared to accept that it's become an idle zone, but if it's
the case that people are chatting elsewhere then I'd consider going
where the users are before giving up on it.
So, if you do actually engage in online chat for any projects or
communities please would you fill in this short questionnaire to let
us know about it?

I've intentionally made it so that it doesn't capture any personal
details and requires no sign-in, so please don't abuse it by
submitting it multiple times. 😀 If it still bothers you that it's a
Google property then you can just email me your thoughts off-list.
I'm not planning to close down the IRC channel as I expect the
people who idle there do so just so that they can ask what is up if
they ever need to. There isn't any actual chat there though, and I
don't see that changing now.
I'm also not promising to set something up on whichever platform
comes out top (this is not a vote!). It would be very interesting to
me to find out where people are, though.

I've been wondering the same, but about the internet in general. In the
era before Stackoverflow, maillists were much more heavily used. After
some time their use dropped and more was posted to Stackoverflow. That
might have been favourable Google ranking, or maybe it was easier to
index (a bit unlikely).
Reddit seems to be high up the ranking these days.
Is Google better at getting users their immediate answers, making
IRC/Maillists or just non-Reddit less relevant?

There's perhaps another (cynical) shift, OS problem solving is less of a
trade now, and I mean that in the sense that a lot of consultants were
spouting "pets vs cattle" (why spend time fixing things when redeploy is
an option). It is misguided, but it is a trend. Given that's a trend,
there's fewer people taking an interest in these areas, so their
community numbers are also dropping.
To answer where's the chat at? Perhaps people are chasing fast news on a
few big sites. If this is the case, is r/bitfolk a sensible option? I
don't think it's one that I'd like, and it was on the questionnaire
either, but if that's where the people are, then is that going to reach
more users in a more convenient way to them? I hate myself for

The #BitFolk ones fell into disrepair some time ago and even by that

Here though, I'm just wondering about chat.
There was a boom in IRC, I think it was around the time that AOL were
pushing out disks. I think by 2010 it was decreasing in popularity.
Those who were 20-30 at the time and had the time, those few are now
fewer.
Maybe I'm waffling, but I think the shift is that the younger generation
are more web, the older generation is more accepting of over
communication tools.
Where are they? I suspect on Reddit, if anywhere. Or watching Netflix.
Maybe this is a broad question for news.ycombinator.com or Slashdot?
I suppose if you asked the same question to newsgroups, the response may
be the same, they're on the web now.

Well, they mention Discord forums on BBC podcasts sometimes, so maybe it
does have a big crowd, I don't know as I haven't ventured into that
community. It seems too much is getting piled into web and it doesn't
feel right ploughing more content into too few sites.
If you set something up elsewhere I'd be tempted to try it.
Shame there's no internet census to answer all this!

As they're a centralised for-profit company they have published
their financials and they have 175 million active users.
The largest current IRC network is Libera, with 34k connected users
(many will be bots and idlers). The largest ever IRC network was
QuakeNet which had 240k users in 2005. Today is has ~6½k.
I don't like Discord but it has totally eclipsed IRC and it is a
place where projects and communities have their chat rooms. If you
watch any YouTuber or streamer on any topic at all (except porn,
because Discord is puritanical AF) if they have a chat community it
will be Discord.
As far as I can see the only communities that avoid Discord are
those that find centralised proprietary services to be an extreme
negative.

Younger generation are all on phones and apps, too, so WhatsApp (which
I've recently had to get used to because of another community that's
using it a lot) and Tik Tok and Snapchat. The latter two are quite
different and no substitute for this list, but they are where the kids
are as far as I know.
I'm quite happy with email, myself. And in text mode, with (neo)mutt!

Yes, there's a multitude of separate web based forums, though Reddit seems a
closer equivalent to the newsgroups world, with it huge diversity of
topics all under one roof.

One thing I'd like to add - if there is a choice between two platforms,
can some thought go into the amount of resource the chat client uses?
When $job-1 sprung MS Teams upon me, my core i3 with 4G RAM at the time
didn't cope well with firefox, chrome and the teams client running. I
tried various things to reduce the available RAM to it, but I did wonder
at the time how much ewaste forcing a client caused.
Fortunately, $job uses Mattermost which consumes much less CPU and RAM,
at least in the last version minimising it free'd a lot of resource.
I've never had client tool problems with IRC, this isn't me trying to
convince that IRC is the only way, but there are so many clients as it
is an open protocol. Being accessible via a browser can still be a bit
hostile to openness and doesn't always solve the resource problems
either.
I'd like the client tool authors to at least think "can I use this all
day with only battery power?" - if the client programs are battery
drains, that might end up with less footfall.
Just random ramblings and rant.

I'm not planning to close the BitFolk IRC channel - it has
effectively done that by itself. It will remain possible to see no
chatter, in a range of open and lightweight client software, for the
foreseeable future.
I'm not egotistical enough to believe I can influence which platform
people chat on. If I could then they'd still be on IRC. I'm
interested in where they actually are, but have no way to direct
that myself.

helpful
for resetting your Fortnite or Pinterest password and not much more.

am a member of the "old people" group.
Personally speaking, I think "chat" is such a broad question. I think you
mean "social chat," sharing the odd amusing link, talking about stuff
that's good, bad, frustrating, etc. It's a "friendly group chat."
I used IRC between 1999 and now, but I only spend a little time on it
because all the active communities are elsewhere. Partly because I don't
have a super robust IRC client, I can use it from anywhere, including
mobile. I have "The Lounge" (a free software web client for IRC) running at
home, but over time, I've become less inclined to open it.
Work stuff is on Slack, and many open-source and old people reliving their
youth in retro computing communities are on Discord. The hardcore Free
Software people seem to all be on Matrix. All three of these platforms are
crap for different reasons. I'm in exactly one group on Signal because that
was dictated by someone else. I'm not too fond of that either. I'm in
WhatsApp chats with many non-nerds (and family). Some people use Facebook,
Instagram and Snapchat groups, but those people were mostly born in a
different century to me.
Personally, these days, I spend more time talking to
friends/associates/like-minded people (who aren't work colleagues or in
topic-specific chats) on Telegram. There are a few nerdy podcast-related
channels and some group chats I'm in there. I'm sure people find Telegram
terribad, too.
Essentially, none of the options are amazing. For me, Telegram is the least
worst, and Discord is the worst, with Matrix, Signal, and IRC lumped in the
"meh" department. I have them all open all the time on every machine, with

Interesting, I think I see it similarly these days. I tend to use it just for
communicating with businesses, and only tend to use it to talk to friends if I know
they’re out of contact for long periods of time. Though I’m not sure when the last time
that was. Oh, and occasionally sending files to someone if they’re less than 25MB.

Is that for clients, the features, the experience the people on it? Since I’ve moved onto
Mastodon from Twitter, I’ve found it easier to find things I want to see/read (lots of
bloom scrolling these days), but the experience to how I use it feels much like using
Tweetdeck in days gone by. So I think I find it better just by the people/content, so’I’d
interested what makes up your views of those.

I'm in a similar situation in that Telegram is the platform I check and
interact with most (all be it not that much for a while). I suspect that
is a combination of where people are and that it is the closest in
similarity to IRC use wise. I am in multiple Discord channels, but find
it too cumbersome in terms of client resources and the mess of channels
most servers have, which leads to less engagement for me. I've used
Slack for work and found it the biggest barrier to communication I've
ever come across. I tended to copy information from there into text
files so as not to lose it, and any questions / requests I had tended to
disappear up up the chat window and not get a response. The busiest
channel was the cat photos one, and I suspect much of the work
communication happened offline in the office where the core team were. I
also run a Matrix client, which is fine, but most of the channels I'm
most interested in seem to be Telegram. Stackoverflow and Reddit, which
have been mentioned in the thread, are platforms I tend to avoid. The
times when I've found them referenced in searches I've found Reddit a
minefield of criticism for the original question and no answer, and
Stackoverflow all to often full of questions with either no answer at
all, or a mass of suggestions that don't work and lead you to other
similar questions that supposedly have the answer, but in practice
don't. I guess that sort of sums up much of the internet ;-)
