I've used half a dozen domain registrars. None of them are perfect,
but so far, Gandi has been the best. They have all the extras that
other DRs charge for. They've also provided good support for the few
occasions where I had questions. Not sure about your specific
question, but my understanding is that their DNS stuff is fairly open.

Actually, before I do, can someone confirm that it's easy to get their control panel
to hand over control of DNS to other servers (I know from experience of doing it for
someone else, that GoDaddy makes it a pain) and they do domain renewals automatically?
