I've never had client tool problems with IRC, this isn't me trying to convince that IRC is the only way, but there are so many clients as it is an open protocol. Being accessible via a browser can still be a bit hostile to openness and doesn't always solve the resource problems either. I'd like the client tool authors to at least think "can I use this all day with only battery power?" - if the client programs are battery drains, that might end up with less footfall.
