The full text search is elasticsearch and the web app is ruby on
rails, neither of which are known for being light on resources.

The good news is that the vast majority of resources in the world
are used by capitalism to market and sell things that no one needs,
so I wouldn't personally worry about a few thousand elasticsearch
instances indexing the text of a few million humans. All the largest
IT corporations in the world are data mining and advertising
operations, which is not the direction that Fediverse is going.

I think the worst resource problem that Fediverse servers have at
the moment is the way that they all stampede to download any link
that is posted, because they don't share the metadata amongst
themselves. I expect they will fix it eventually though.
