Hi folks,
At approximately 13:15Z today, the host obstler began spewing the
following kernel message:
unregister_netdevice: waiting for v-somedev to become free. Usage count = 1
and became unable to create new network connections.
I'm not able to rescue it from this state so I am in the process of
rebooting it. I am attempting to shut all VPSes down cleanly rather
than suspend as that seems too risky at present.
I will update you later.
Cheers,
Andy

Hi everyone,
I'm experiencing some strange network drops (or perhaps "pauses") on my
VPS. Network traffic seems to be stopped for a few seconds (~15-30 secs)
These seem to happen every few minutes. This seems to have started over the
last couple of days and affect all network traffic AFAICT. (Certainly HTTP
and SSH are disrupted.) There's no loading issues or memory issues that I
can see.
Has anyone else been experiencing similar? Next step is to run tcpdump to
"capture" one of these pauses.
Thanks,
Tony
Hi all,
On my Etch VPS, apt tells me I should upgrade to the latest kernel
packages with xen, but when I try to I get the following;
Setting up linux-image-2.6.26-2-xen-686 (2.6.26-15) ...

Googling, I found a post on this very list with the exact error and
recommended fix;
http://lists.bitfolk.com/lurker/message/20080529.142153.954fedf4.el.html
I'd implement it right away apart from the bit where Andy says 'images
installed after today will be setup like this from the start', and as my
VPS is only a few weeks old, I thought I'd ask around to see if there
are any known issues, or a newer, more recommended fix..
cheers
John
This has started to affect my VPS over the last week or so, although i am on
a WIFI connection where the router was recently changed. I can however
confirm that for me restarting the VPS has no effect.
Hi folks,
Last night at approximately 01:40Z faustino was power cycled. It
wasn't done by me, and on talking to the colo provider it seems only
this machine in he rack was affected and nobody was working in the
rack at the time.
As a result all customers on faustino experienced a hard reboot at
around that time.
I've been trying to discover how/why this happened but there is
nothing suspicious logged, so I'm having a hard time. Obviously I
do suspect a hardware problem and will be keeping a close eye on the
server. There is spare hardware which can be used if need be.
Apologies for the disruption.
Cheers,
Andy

Hi,
A couple of things:
1)
Those within ranting distance at the time may recall that I became a
bit annoyed with Google back in March, as they have now hiked their
Google Checkout transaction fees up some 250% to bring them in line
with those of PayPal.
It used to be that I encouraged people to pick Google Checkout over
PayPal, but now that doesn't make sense as they cost BitFolk exactly
the same. Also BitFolk is on the edge of qualifying for lower
transaction fees with PayPal; this is based on gross sales put
through, so it now makes even less sense to encourage use of Google
Checkout.
So, if you are flexible about how you pay, BitFolk's preferences are
(in order):
- Bank transfer or standing order (Faster Payments now in operation)
- PayPal
- Google Checkout
- Cheque in the post (only for those paying quarterly or yearly)
But please do pay by whichever means is best for you.
2)
I'm considering doing direct debit via a third party. If you have a
strong opinion either way about paying that way, would you mind
letting me know?
3)
Finally, the level of late payments has become quite high and it
feels like the 30 days grace period extended beyond due date is being
abused. I would rather not punish those who pay on time by raising
prices to cover the hassle, so it is very likely that in the coming
months we will instead be offering 7 days of credit and sticking
firmly to it.
Cheers,
Andy

That is a good idea, I would go for it. It also has the advantage of
making departing customers work a little. Inertia can be very
valuable.

Hi,
At approximately 16:52Z, something went wrong on faustino and it
become impossible to start any new VPS.
While attempting to resolve the issue without a reboot, at
approximately 17:00Z unfortunately all VPSes ended up being hard
shut down (roughly equivalent to a power cycle), and then being
unable to restart them meant that a reboot of the server was
required.
All VPSes on faustino were up and running again by approximately
17:16Z.
As to the root cause of the issue, there is very little to go on.
Nothing useful was logged as regards the initial issue, although I
have now at least learned not to attempt to restart one particular
daemon in future.
I will be making putting the new hardware into service my top
priority as I believe it's the best way of avoiding these bugs,
although faustino had been up for 101 days, much of that with no
additional VPSes being added, so this particular issue is probably
not a well known one.
Again, my apologies for the disruption.
Regards,
Andy
