I see SSH alerts all the time across all VPSes that have monitoring
enabled. This appears to be due to slow SSH dictionary attacks
filling up all MaxStartups slots:

I suspect if you put sshd on a different port or increase
MaxStartups then that issue will go away.

In the early hours of this morning a single customer VPS which was
in an OOM death spiral made the backup system get stuck on it and no
one else's backups (for that schedule on that backup server, which
is about 10 of you, including you) got done after that.
I got the process unstuck about an hour ago and so RECOVERY notices
will be arriving now for those affected.
