Embarrassingly, I missed that bit, but it’s certainly something I will pay attention to next upgrade time.

The majority of my problems appear to have come from things like deprecated options in various package config files that, rather than being nicely ignored in new versions, cause stuff to grind to a screeching halt, or packages not being correctly installed that would be required for new ways of doing various things. Unfortunately, the documentation and forum posts I found on most of the issues I fixed weren’t very good at giving specific pointers, so I’m grateful for the help I got here.
