As ever, it depends on what you want to do with them. For the past few
years, the bulk of WordPress's big issues have been user privilege
escalation exploits, so if you want a 'membership' site, you need to
think about who you actually trust... and then use something else for
the bits that actually need membership.

I haven't touched Joomla in a while, but I think you're right: third
party stuff can have problems long after issues with the main releases
are sorted.
