I haven't been able to replicate this yet—the several attempts I
have made to install Debian jessie have so far all worked. It could
possibly have been a transient problem with the apt-cacher or the
Debian mirror it caches. I'm still looking into it.

So anyway, as far as I know the Debian jessie net install does work.

If anyone else encounters this, please do let me know.
