g for suggestions for an email-hosting company. Need
POP3 access. I need something other than Google.

I've been a happy customer of http://fastmail.fm for a few years now. I
think from memory the servers are hosted in the US, but the original
company is Australian (albeit now owned by Opera), so that just about
satisfies the English requirement you mentioned later :) They are mail
only though, so won't handle domains (my personal preference there is
http://gandi.net FWIW).

An understandable view - although I would say that I set up a Postfix+Dovecot
mailserver for 50 users - and it has been running now for 3 years with zero
downtime - and zero maintenance beyond keeping it updated.

The hassle is in setting it up - if you can stomach putting in a few hours
work - you'll have a reliable system by the end of it.

There are a number of easy to follow howtos on howtoforge.com, which is how I
started out.

http://goo.gl/V4pfD

<http://www.howtoforge.com/virtual-users-with-postfix-dovecot-mysql-roundcube-iredadmin-on-debian-6-squeeze>

I haven't used this exact howto, but I've used others to great success. Not
sure about iredadmin or iredmail - anyone used them?

Obviously you'd want fail2ban and iptables configured - but that's no
different from running any other bitfolk VPS.

The one thing you won't have is any support :/

SimplyMail do some good email deals, their basic option sounds suitable for
what you want, and is =A312 a year. If you want a good web interface, try
their zimbra option, but it's relatively pricey at =A340 a year.

http://www.simplymailsolutions.com/products/mse-basic

For the domain name stuff, personally I'd keep that with a dedicated domain
name registrar, there's too many things that can go wrong to let someone
who doesn't specialise deal with them.

I'm a very happy user of Domainmonster - http://www.domainmonster.com, but
other people swear by Gandi - http://www.gandi.net/

Thanks everyone for all your tips. I knew I'd get informed opinions from
this list.

The dovecot site has companies that appear to be quite good. I wish more of
the Swedish and Finnish sites were in English ... I would have been very
interested.

I think simplymailsolutions.com would be ideal for me for a straight email
site.

However, I notice that if I transfer my domain to gandi, they provide very
good email hosting free with the domain.

So, I've found my solution: a mixture of gandi and simplymailsolutions.
I'll try one domain on gandi to see how it works out.

Just a comment about simplymailsolutions. I had an IMAP account with
them 2 or 3 years ago and found that it was very slow if you set your
MUA (Thunderbird in my case) to check more than 2 or 3 folders. Their
support were helpful but couldn't identify any issues at their end
(despite other IMAP servers I was using being fine). They have most
likely upgraded their infrastructure since then but thought I'd
mention it anyway.

I personally use Google Apps for Business now for my domain which has
worked extremely well (and allows some in my family to continue using
Outlook for mail/calendar/contacts :) )
