Hi folks,
At approximately 13:15Z today, the host obstler began spewing the
following kernel message:
unregister_netdevice: waiting for v-somedev to become free. Usage count = 1
and became unable to create new network connections.
I'm not able to rescue it from this state so I am in the process of
rebooting it. I am attempting to shut all VPSes down cleanly rather
than suspend as that seems too risky at present.
I will update you later.

That was completed by approximately 13:46Z.
This same problem happened before on this host about 4 months ago,
but I don't believe it is a hardware issue. There is a rolling
upgrade of hypervisor and kernel being planned at the moment and I
hope that will get around this, but if not then I will replace the
hardware.

Actually thinking about it some more, I have a suspicion that this
is related to radvd and IPv6. radvd is the Router Advertisement
Daemon. It's what allows your VPSes to automatically configure
their IPv6 connectivity, and the implementation on Linux does not
seem very stable.
In the shorter term I would like to try turning off radvd on
obstler. I'll do that at 13:00Z Tuesday 12th May. This means that
if you have a VPS on obstler and you use IPv6, you will need to
statically configure it otherwise it will stop working. If you
don't know how to do that then please respond on- or off-list for
some assistance.
If your VPS is not on obstler or if you don't use IPv6 then you can
ignore this.

Debian Etch is indeed using 2.6.18 kernel, so I am not sure if this
is fixed in it, and Xen does shut down network devices without
removing the addresses first. I can work around this, either by
making sure the addresses are removed or else not having them in the
first place.
Also now the new servers are in I will be doing rolling upgrades of
hosts to Debian lenny amd64.
