Hi,
I thought I better point out - the reason that Bitfolk does not
offer Ubuntu Intrepid is that the Intrepid Xen kernel will not work
on anything except Ubuntu Intrepid host server, and Bitfolk does not
run Ubuntu.
I reported this as a bug ages ago and the outcome was that they
don't consider it a bug, have no intention of changing this (will
not be fixed in Jaunty or any later release either).
So if you are planning to upgrade to Intrepid please bear in mind
that you will need to use a non-Intrepid kernel, such as the one
from Hardy, or an upstream one or something like that. Basically I
do not recommend it.

barium.vps.bitfolk.com currently runs Ubuntu Intrepid. Would you
recommend that I "upgrade" to Debian Lenny?

Hi Ken,
Not really - I assume you're running an older kernel, so as long as
the kernel is doing what you want and you're keeping up to date with
security fixes it should be okay.
Changing to lenny will require a new install.
Hopefully at some point either the upstream kernel pvops work is
good enough to support Jaunty or whatever, or Bitfolk switches to
KVM.
This is really just a warning for people who feel they can cope with
upgrading but not with running kernels that aren't packaged for
their distribution.

If I understand you correctly, this will mean that a Ubuntu Hardy slice
will become an orphan with no
upgrade path when LTS ends in April 2011.
Is that your understanding also?

Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) support runs till April 2013 on the server,
it's 2011 on the desktop.

Also note that Ubuntu supports LTS to LTS release upgrades. So when
the next LTS comes out (_probably_ 10.04) then you should be able to
go direct from 8.04 to 10.04.

I don't think there is much point in speculating about what things
will be like in 2013, or even 2011 as regards to Linux
virtualisation other than that I'm sure it will still be going
strong in one form or another. I don't know if Bitfolk will still
be using Xen then, or if KVM or other technologies will be in use.
The release of the next LTS in 2010 will indeed be the interesting
time.
