Which packages have you downloaded? I believe that:
http://security.debian.org/pool/updates/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-image-2.6.26…
http://security.debian.org/pool/updates/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-modules-2.6.…
are all that should be required. Download those, dpkg -i *.deb,
update-grub and make sure it shows them.
If you've tried this and it didn't work, I'll spin up an 8.04 test
VPS and try it..

Yup, thats pretty much what I did, although update-grub did nothing more than
tell me that it had identified the new kernel. It seemed to run OK, but failed
to make any changes to the menu.lst file bar the timestamp! That said, going
back to it in a more controlled fashion and not panicing immediately after it
failed to boot I've sorted the problem. I simply had a rogue 'n' at the end
of
the kernel and image file names - doh!!
I seem to have asked two of the dopeyest questions on this list so far, I'll
try to do better in future - I'm not usually this bad! :)
I'll now keep my fingers crossed for better reliability with the new kernel.
