Hi all,
I'm a bit confused by this, I suspect, because I'm more used to setting this up
with IPv4 through nice, easy to use control panels!
I want to give my VPS's IPv6 address a reverse DNS entry.
- DNS for my domain is provided by 123-reg.
- I can see in the Bitfolk panel that I can delegate RDNS to various name servers.
- 123-reg don't offer the option of PTR records in their control panel
- I can see how to make zone files here http://rdns6.com/zone
Am I stuck if 123-reg won't let me create PTR records?
Can I use the bitfolk panel to delegate to a completely different name server? Would
there be a problem using my VPS as the name server?
There's probably a fairly fundamental gap in my understanding so any pointers would be
appreciated.

No problem doing that - my VPS is doing reverse DNS for my IPv6 addresses.

Not at all: your forward and reverse zones (domains) are entirely
separate things. You need to arrange DNS hosting for both of them.
123-reg provide you some hosting for the forward zone only.

This is a good way to do it. You'll have to run a name server on your
VPS. Bitfolk can also provide secondary servers: it's best for each zone
to have at least 2 servers, each on different networks.

It sounds like a dead end if you wanted 123-reg to host a reverse
zone, yes.

Yes, delegate wherever you like. Just make sure that the
nameserver(s) you're delegating to are actually serving the zone
first. Should the Panel check for that instead of just letting you
delegate to something that won't work?
So that means that if you would like secondary service from BitFolk,
please put in the support ticket for that before you do the
delegation.

No.
Also, some people choose to have their VPS as a hidden master; the
secondary servers AXFR from it but it is not present in the NS set
in the zone.

Thanks, all, for your help so far.
I've decided to set up bind on my VPS and use that to serve PTR records for my IPv6
address.
This is what've I done so far but I'm not familiar with bind. Is this right? How
do I test it?
My IP block is 2001:ba8:1f1:f1fc::/64 and my IP is 2001:ba8:1f1:f1fc::2
- I've set up bind
- I've added a bit to named.conf.local
- I've created the file /etc/bind/zones/2001.ba8.1f1.f1fc-db

That's wrong. The record should either be:

Since the zone name is c.f.1.f.1.f.1.0.8.a.b.0.1.0.0.2.ip6.arpa,
leaving the dot off the end of the second example will make it
equivalent to the first.
Also your server doesn't appear to be allowing queries.
When it is working you'll need to put in a support ticket to get it
delegated to you.
