Hi guys,
I am planning to resell hosting accounts on my VPS to businesses as part of
a web design and programming job that I do now. However, I appear to be
having some problems with bind9, and setting up my own nameservers. I
originally thought that a domain translates to an IP and that was the end of
it.
This is what I know so far:
-I need 2 subdomains, ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com
This is what I have no idea about:
-Do these subdomains have to be on different servers, or just different
IP's? Can they even use the same IP?
-If they need to be different, can my hosting server be on 1.2.3.4 if my
nameservers are: 1.2.3.4 and 5.6.7.8
I have followed this:
https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/serverguide/C/dns-configuration.html in order
to set up my first nameserver, and it will now ping example.com if I set the
resolv.conf to use itself.
If I set turasmara.com to use that nameserver, and ping it from my home box
I do not get anything. However if I ping it from the VPS I get:
root@hostinghaven:~# ping turasmara.com
PING turasmara.com (1.2.3.4) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from www.domainname.com (1.2.3.4): icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.018 ms
What have I done wrong...and what do I till need to do to get this to work?

You can have name servers on totally different domains if you want, too.

Ideally the two (at least) NS
that you have for each domain would be on
not only different IPs, but also on different networks, commonly one in
Europe, one in the US and possibly one in Asia. Depends on your
users/visitors.
You can have the same 2 (or more) NS for all domains, yes. Using
ns1.domain and ns2.domain, just point them all to the same 2 IPs.
Having one server with two IPs and setting those two IPs as ns1+ns2 both
is allowed, I guess, but is rather pointless cause then it's practically
one NS, isn't it? If you only have one NS, just use that.
-If they need to be different, can my hosting server

You can run NS daemons and web daemons on
the same machine, yes.
Although I would go with something much lighter than bind, nsd for example.

Test using dig
or drill (guess with bind you have dig). E.g.
dig @localhost example.com
dig @localhost mx example.com
dig @localhost ns example.com
If I set turasmara.com <http://turasmara.com> to use that nameserver,
and ping it from my home box I do not get anything. However if I ping
it from the VPS I get:

Can't tell you much without knowing
what 'i do not get anything'
means.... and how you "set turasmara.com to use that nameserver". How
did you configure things?
What have I done wrong...and what do I till need to do to get this to
work?

Rather than starting with what you think you need, it might be best
if you said what you actually wanted to do. From your text below it
seems that you have the domain turasmara.com and you want to point
the A record for turasmara.com to a specific IP.

Your domain turasmara.com is going to need at least two nameservers.
You would normally set these nameservers up to be authoritative for
turasmara.com, test them and then tell your registrar (whoever you
bought turasmara.com from) about them.
It may be possible to "trick" the registrar by having two
nameservers that resolve to the same IP address, or by configuring
two different IP addresses on the same host and giving those as the
nameserver IPs. However, besides the fact that there is a good
reason for needing at least two nameservers (resilience), many
registrars are able to spot these tricks and won't let you get away
with them.
So it would be best to forget about having two nameservers that are
actually the same host.

It's very difficult to tell what the problem is when you obscure the
names and IP addresses involved and don't give full reports of
output ("I do not get anything").
You say you've set up a nameserver - what is the hostname of this
nameserver, is it set up to be authoritative for turasmara.com and
please can you post the zone file that you have for turasmara.com in
this nameserver?

It doesn't answer your question, but having dabbled in a similar area
myself I did arrive at some conclusions:
Unless you have very specific requirements or plan to register a /lot/
of domains or make frequent updates, I'd recommend sticking with the
registrar's DNS servers.
For example I have many domains at 123-reg.co.uk, they have a simple web
interface for updating DNS records, and their charges compared to the
raw underlying cost of the domain are pretty ridiculously low. They'll
deal with all the bind setup, providing multiple servers on separate
networks, etc.
Obviously you may well have already considered this and maybe it won't
work for you, but I thought it worthy of a mention.

Hi Daniel,
I do something similar, and use zone edit. See zoneedit.com
When I (or my client) register the domain, I (they) set up the name
servers to the Zone Edit servers I have been given, and then
I point domains, and sub-domains where I want using a web interface.
And the cost is very modest - certainly less than the time taken to
understand bind.
