If you have a /dev/sda1 witout a /dev/sda then the update-grub
script will probably complain and be unable to rewrite your menu.lst
for the new kernel, failing the installation of that package.
You could manually fix up the menu.lst and it would work fine, but I
advise putting in a support ticket to get the block devices changed
to /dev/xvda (with your FS directly on it).
