Can I select a preference between IP versions?
I have an app in PHP which runs from the shell, is it possible to indicate a
preference as to which IP stack is used?
The destination has today enabled IPv6, however, the route via IPv4 is still
a faster route so would like to use IPv4 in preference but do not wish to
simply drop the IPv6 stack as the routing / speed may well improve over
time.

I use the php fsockopen function to initiate communication (I will get round
to re-writing in C at some point when time allows).
I've had to disable IPv6 for the moment as it attempts a v6 connection
rather than v4 by default. Previously the destination didn't resolve to v6
so was not an issue.
Ideally I'd like to have v4 & v6 enabled and select between to allow me to
compare speeds every now and then and decide when to switch to pure v6 comms
for this app.

And additional observation, if I telnet to the remote port, this also
defaults to the v6 address so it's not just a PHP issue.

Your resolver is probably returning the first AAAA record it finds. You
can make a hosts file entry (if file is used in host.conf) to return an
ipv4 address.

without having to mess about with hosts files.
