I'll have to read through that myself. The setup I use at the moment, and have
for some years is:
o Exim as the MTA to handle all the SMTP stuff
o Dovecot as the MDA and IMAP server, to drop mail into the mailboxes and
handle IMAP connections (it also does POP on one of my servers)
o Roundcube for webmails
o I virtual host, so no real user accounts
o Greylistd is used for greylisting, which I only do for servers/domains in the
RBL lists I use
That last bit is probably worth explaining a bit further. When I last rebuilt
my mail server I only setup grelisting for anti-spam initially, and until
recently it has worked well enought that I've not bothered with anything more
sophisticated. Basically everything that isn't on one of the RBLs I've
configured is let through, but anything on an RBL is given the temporary
failure. This resulted in most spam not being attempted again, but any servers
that had been mistakenly listed would just get delayed. So far this has cleared
out all the really unpleasant stuff since they never bother to retry. Things
have picked up a bit recently though, so I'm looking into using Spamassassin or
something simlar again. For a long while though, it has been a very easy, low
overhead solution that has worked well enough for me :)
Two things I'm looking to improve:
1. as mentioned above, I plan to add Spamassassin or something to uprate the
filtering now they seem to be retrying more
2. My setup involves hubbed hosts using my Bitfolk VPS to forward on to my
local server. This unfortunately leaves me with batches of email accepted at
the Bitfolk stage being frozen in the mail queue of my local server because
they have not return address. I either need to tweak the config on my
Bitfolk server or let mail come directly in. They sit in the queue for a
while and then get deleted though, so I've not made the time to tidy things
up yet!
This handles 4 local accounts on each of two servers (4 accessed from the
internet one by parents, and 4 on the local one by family), plus about 10 that
forward on. These are split between 10 domains (I think), well 2 each on one, 4
on another, the 10 forwarded on another and the other for are pretty much just
me, 4 being variations of my work domain.
