I've set up IPv6 tunnelling between my VPS and a linux box at home (both
CentOS) and now have IPv6 working on my home network a treat.
The problem is, though, that the tunnel appears to time out after a few
minutes when traffic stops flowing and I start getting "network
unreachable" errors when trying to connect out from my home network. If
I ping6 something on the home network from the VPS it appears to wake
the tunnel up again.
Is there a way round this (other than having a cron job ping something
every minute or so) - maybe some sort of timeout parameter when setting
up a sit tunnel?

Check the software you use on both ends, it seems like a dial-on-demand
scenario going wrong. Grab the man page, see if you can find anything
about dod or timeouts.
Without you specifying the software you're using for the tunnel, there's
really not much we can do.

I'm not using any extra software - just the standard initscripts-ipv6
that come with RHEL (and hence CentOS). It's a simple IPv6-in-IPv4
tunnel between the two sit devices.
Unfortunately, initscripts doesn't seem to have a timeout parameter for
tunnel devices.
I've set up a ping every 5 minutes from the VPS which seems to be
keeping it up in the meantime.

Hi Mike,
It's likely a TCP/UDP timeout on your ADSL router.
Fortunately I don't get that problem as I run OSPF/OSPF6 across my VPN - and
also Nagios :)

I don't think so - there's no TCP/UDP involved as far as the router is
concerned. It's just routing IP protocol 41 packets.
This seems to be an issue with the tunnel itself going to sleep when
nothing goes through it, so a Linux issue.
