Hello all,
Long shot probably, but have any of you had any success migrating away from
wordpress to a static site generator? I really want to ditch wordpress.
The guides on the hugo website are useful, but Ideally I'd like something
that can slurp in the whole site images and well as text and dump out a
directory structure with images and the posts they belong to together. If
it can be made to preserve relative URLs too that would be great.
Failing there being some tool I've overlooked, does anyone have suggestions
for a paid solution?

I migrated with a Drupal site to Hugo. I regretted the decision at
the time, and I'm not sure I can be bothered to manage the Hugo site
in the future. (Fortunately, I don't write much on my website any
more).
The data migration was a "simple" matter of dumping the database
tables, and writing a few shell scripts to extract the relevant data
into Hugo files.
However... I found the Hugo documentation absolutely appalling.
They do eventually give you information, but it's badly written and
poorly structured -- both at the level of individual pages and at the
level of the whole thing. There's no overview, nothing which gives a
reasonable description of how things fit together at a high level.
Actually working out how to achieve any particular goal was an
exercise in total frustration.
I don't know if any of the other static site generators out there
are any better, but I find it hard to recommend Hugo.

I have done this before using wget, although I'm not sure about the "static
site generator" aspect because you end up with a completely flat html copy
of the site - which worked fine in my case as it was never edited.

I copied and pasted my word press data to PubTal, then to plain
markdown. Given the time it consumed and extra work, to be rid of
wordpress, I'd call that success.
WordPress was a nice for about a week then it gets abused. You can't
really use it without some "super duper plugin caching system" but that
bites you eventually as the disk cache has to be writable by the httpd
process, which is bad. Maybe these days there's a way to protect that
through SELinux, but it's just trouble I'd rather not have.
Static will always be served in fewer cycles than dynamic, and probably
gets GoogleBot points for a faster page delivery via mmap or sendfile,
than waiting for mod_php, even if that data can come from memcache or
similar.

I run PHP things under mod_proxy_fcgi which makes all PHP for a
given vhost run as a specific user. That uses only features built in
to Apache and PHP so is pretty simple and reliable:

Agreed that is better than the way I was doing it before I knew of
things like docker. However, it may not stop runaway abuse of SMTP if
the container has a working /usr/sbin/sendmail or PHP has a working SMTP
config.
Initially wordpress was meant to be a convenience setup for a nice
looking page with an editor, tags and other nice things. In the long run
I think it was a bad idea and there's some element of data format
lock-in. Markdown seems the way to do it these days.
If $company told me to look after wordpress, container and SELinux would
be a minimum otherwise I'd fear a P45 at some point due to widespread
abuse.

Depending on how much you want to change their content, look at the
WordPress static site generators.
Simply Static works well if you've sensibly avoided going anywhere near
the Gutenberg versions of WP, otherwise there's https://wp2static.com/
which also has links to commercial alternatives.
The basic workflow is 'get site the way you want / convert to static in
a few seconds / switch Apache to serve that instead / leave it that way
or switch back to WP to do some editing / repeat'.
If you're not doing a pile of edits, this is the easiest way to go.

avoiding it has changed with Apache changes, but it's been many many
years since I've used mod_php.
