I'm thinking of changing my vps to debian from ubuntu
I'm not sure the best way to do it
I was thinking of maybe paying for an extra months hosting and having a 2nd
server setup with a clean install and leaving me a month to get everything
transferred over and tested before taking the old 1 down
i was wondering if anyone has done anything like this or can see any
problems with doing it like that or has a better idea

It depends if you need a lot of time to migrate things while the
services are down. If you don't need a lot of time (or don't care
how long the services are down) then I can just re-image your VPS as
Debian with the old content of your filesystem under /old. You would
then have to set your services back up.

This would work. The down side here is that your account name and IP
address(es), v4 and v6, will change. The up side obviously being
that you have a month to move things across to the new IP.
