World IPv6 Day[1] is nearly over in the UK. Have you done anything with
IPv6 on your VPSes today? Did you already have IPv6 set up and
serving production traffic?

Both my personal [1] and business [2] websites, e-mail, and DNS have
been set up and serving over IPv6 for a few months. I even have quite
a few subdomains that only I need to access running IPv6-only. :)
At the moment I SOCKS tunnel all my Internet traffic through my VPS
which gives me the appearance of having native IPv6, sadly the router at
home isn't good enough to support a HE or SixXS tunnel.

Been running a Virtualmin Pro server with many customer sites dualstacked for a couple
months now, giving each domain its own IPv6 from our pool (automatically assigned when a
domain is added to the system, it just grabs an IP from the pool and assigns it to that
domain).
Our entire app stack (Web, Mail, FTP, SSH, DNS, etc) now all work on both IP stacks
interchangeably, our control panel handles all the new v6 stuff brilliantly (thanks
Virtualmin!), and our domain reg service (OpenSRS-backed) has all the necessary nameserver
glue sorted too.
We're on a config freeze for June because of a reduced support period on our end at
the end of this month and want to make sure things are stable for that week, so got this
all done a couple months ago in advance of today, and today we have continued to see
traffic come in without a hitch.
Thanks for giving me an environment to make that possible!

Hi Andy,
I did! To cut a long story short: Some time ago I built an
Internet-enabled cat feeder which, just for the heck of it really, a later
enhancement allowed me to configure it to support IPv6 - hey, if nothing
else it lets you use addresses like ::feed ;-). So, in support of World
IPv6 Day I thought it only seemed right to indeed open it up to the world
to view/control... over IPv6...
My VPS played a key role - out here in the sticks there was no way I way
going to be able to stream live video (two cameras) to multiple concurrent
users and so I ended up streaming it to the VPS and getting everyone to
pull it from there. It also made sense to host the actual control panel
alongside it too.
Feel free to check it out... although I urge caution regarding
expectations - it is only a cat feeder after all!

Erm, no, I've always had it turned off.
At some point, I will turn it on, but when most people don't have it
from their kit / ISP, it seems like additional work for no benefit.

Not done anything new, I've had all v4 services running on v6 since it's
configuration, there a couple more DNS resolvers running on v6 only.
But just for today, I've been strutting around in my HE IPv6 Sage
tshirt. A few colleagues at internet operations were quite jealous.
This was the highlight, I had waited since around November this big day,
it was, fantastic. Looking at the reports I'd say it's been a big
success. Plus.net who in the past didn't seem that eager to get involved
were making some big efforts to get people connected.

Anyway, I didn't realize that my VPS has a public IPv6 address! I added
it to the DNS record for the domain name (remoteguru.com) and now it works
fine :-) I had to install netcat-openbsd to run netcat on IPv6 to test
it.
I have a hosting account with Dreamhost who also recently announced
support for IPv6. So I could run both netcat and ping6 from their
Debian boxes to test my BitFolk VPS. It was fun :-) The output
of mtr looked a bit weird though:

put the spurious "www." on the address? It's no harder to handle a
configuration with and without the www.
Having an DNS records at your NS delegation point is fraught with
technicalities. For example, you can't (easily) put a CNAME there. If
you put an A record there then you have to be able to accept inbound
mail at that machine even if it's supposed to be your "web" server. MX
isn't the only way of controlling mail: it's a relatively "new" thing
as
far as mail is concerned and it's still allowed to deliver mail to host
specified by and A record.
It's possible to make it work but it's difficult to get exactly right
and some purists believe it to be a point of policy to disallow it.
I am told that you should be able to get away with this provided that
you get your port 25 firewall correct on your webserver. Set it to
"reject" so that things fail quickly.

Actually the "implicit MX" rule only applies if there are no MX
records present (RFC 5321, section 5.1).

Yes, although it was a close-run thing. I've been publishing IPv6
records for my websites for some time. It was only a few weeks ago
that I discovered (via a conversation on IRC) that my web server
wasn't actually delivering any content over IPv6. I finally got around
to asking Bitfolk to investigate last week, and I believe I've been
IPv6-enabled on carfax.org.uk and darksatanic.net since.
I don't have any stats on how many hits I get from each protocol,
but I can probably find out with a quick grep if I remember to do it
tomorrow.

Nothing special, I'm already dual-stacked on all public-facing services :)
I did, however, take a peek in on my logs to see who was actually using it.
list traffic from debian & bitfolk is coming in over 6 just fine!. Oddly,
Google and Yahoo, two of the big names on v6day, are still inbound over v4.

I'd be interested to know.
I had tried setting up a tunnel with SixXS a few weeks back but got
couldn't get it set up so as to be able to ping anything. I suspect my
router is too old to be IPv6 capable.
So haven't bothered since and will wait until Zen make IPv6 available
then try again. I'll also need a 'step by step guide' I suspect, as it
is getting harder to learn new tricks as I get older.

I must say - thank *you* for the IPv6 connectivity. It was one of the key
reasons behind me signing up with Bitfolk in the first place, and indeed
without it the cat feeder would not have been been opened up!
The cats pass on their thanks too - they were fed 168 times that day.... ;-)
