Hello all.
I have recently joined, following many years as a member of a hosting
co-op. I'm currently in the middle of getting my VPS set up as I like
it and have run into a problem that, for once :), is not really my
fault.
Yesterday, I downloaded Bastille from the Debian 5 / Lenny
repositories, but it will not install on Debian 5.
This is a known bug (see
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=510884) - and is even
marked as 'fixed' - but it has left my packages in a twist.
If I try to uninstall it, I get this

Stopping Bastille firewall..ERROR: no reject method specified
(corrupt config file?) Exiting!
FAILED.

.. even if I try forcing it.
OK, after wondering how on earth this one got past testing, let's try
downloading the updated version and see about installing that over the
top:
semi-divine:~# dpkg -i bastille_3.0.9-9_all.deb
Selecting previously deselected package bastille.

Preparing to replace bastille 1:2.1.1-19 (using
bastille_3.0.9-9_all.deb) ...

So I currently can't uninstall it or reinstall it. Grrr.
What should I do next, any Debian experts reading?

Okay so a prerm script failed and this is preventing you removing
the package.
Generally in these cases I take a look in /var/lib/dpkg/info/ for a
prerm script matching the package, see what it wants to do, and make
it so that it works.
That modification may take the form of putting files where it
expects them or editing the prerm script to do something different,
or even just deleting the prerm script entirely.
The point is, once you make that script exit successfully (or never
run at all), you can make progress.

At a guess I'd suggest fixing the firewall script so that either
/bin/true runs so that the package manager is fooled, or things happen
as they should.
You can probably do this by linking /etc/init.d/bastille to /bin/true.

I had thought of that one, but was a bit nervous about trying it.
What I've just done...
edit /var/lib/dpkg/info/bastille.prerm so that it always exits 'true'.
This means dpkp -r bastille thinks it has worked.
Unfortunately, it still won't install the newer version, despite doing
a purge first, with the same error as before. I'm a bit more reluctant
to fake bits of that because you risk ending up with networking
disabled.

What is the exact error on install? Are you sure it's not related
to an incomplete removal?
I'm a bit more reluctant

If the software won't even install, and there is nothing of the old
install left, report upstream and don't use it? :)
