Hi all,
I would be very grateful if any Debian expert out there could offer me some
advice.
Somehow, probably editing my sources.list(s) in response to the recent
jessie updates removal, I have managed to break the apt update/upgrade
process:
:~# apt-get upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
systemd : Depends: udev (>= 208-8) but it is not installed
Recommends: libpam-systemd but it is not installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try using -f.
After searching I've tried various suggested fixes such as
apt-get -f install
apt-get clean
apt-get autoclean
apt-get autoremove
apt-get dist-upgrade
dpkg --configure -a
and so on but all to no avail.
There is some info on my system below.

Do you really want to remove systemd and switch to another init system?
I'm guessing not.
I suggest that you install the udev and libpam-systemd dependancies for
systemd:
apt-get install udev libpam-systemd

Seems you're using different packages - libpam-systemd wants a lower
version of systemd than the one you have, do you have one source using
Jessie and another using something higher? Any 3rd party repos? Can
you post your sources file?

Ah, yes, I see Richard has commented out the jessie/updates line.
Richard, you need that line in order to get the security updates.
This is probably why you aren't being offered version 215-17+deb8u13
of systemd, etc.
Your line looked correct except for being commented out. Don't
forget to "apt update" after uncommenting.

-a initially but at the end of the output it said there were two additional
records and suggested adding -a to the command. Have I got two systemd

once more with
apt-get -f install
and this time unlike the previous times apt appears to have fixed things.

I can't say I'm totally clear on what has corrected the system, I'm
guessing a combination of correcting the sources.lists and the final

what it wanted to do)

I can't say I'm totally clear on what has corrected the system, I'm
guessing a combination of correcting the sources.lists and the final

Well, you had the jessie/updates source commented out before, and
now you don't, and the above packages came from jessie/updates.
Commenting this source out led you to a situation where you had
packages installed that depended on packages that could only be
found at the commented out place. That's why things started refusing
to proceed.
Uncommenting that again, and doing an "apt update", put you back in
a position where "apt -f install" was able to sort it out again.

As an aside, were users of Debian jessie here generally aware that
since June 2018 jessie has not been supported by Debian's security

The people working on the LTS project (i.e. the Debian developers
actually making the package updates) are paid to do so by sponsors,
and BitFolk has been a bronze level sponsor for quite a few years.
BitFolk used to allow the option of donating your referral bonuses
to Debian but I stopped offering this a long time ago because it
became difficult to give the money to Debian in an
accountant-friendly way, as Debian is not a legal entity.
I've been toying with the idea of bringing the option back, but
funnelling the funds into the LTS project instead, as that is
administered by a real company (Freexian SARL) that sends invoices.
Though at €85/hour (€75/hour of which goes to the developer) I
expect it would be quite some time before this would support an
increase from 1 to 2 hours per month.

If you run a business that depends on longer support of Debian
releases then you might want to consider helping to do it (if you're
a Debian Developer) or directly paying other DDs to do it through
the Freexian sponsorship. A bonus of sponsoring this is that you get
to send a list of packages that you use and the LTS team will work
on those packages by preference.
