Why did you ask for Debian lenny if you needed packages newer than
the ones provided by lenny?
I need later versions of python and Django. Those on

I can't see what parameter I could use with
apt-get in order to
look elsewhere for the later versions. If not, is it OK to edit
the entries in /etc/apt/sources.list to point to a non-cached
repository?
If you have to ask this question then the answer is no.
You would probably be best off upgrading to squeeze, which you can
do yourself:
