{snip: crossgrading}
I crossgraded my VPS last week (Percona XtraDB cluster wouldn't rejoin,
version was too old and they've stopped doing 32bit builds). It was...an
interesting experience. Not bad, just mildly challenging.
I've probably done it around 10 times now, and that's pretty
much how I would describe my experience of it, although I think I
have had it slightly worse as there were a number of iterations
where apt wanted to remove things that would break the whole OS if I
forced it to do it,
There were also many iterations where I knew what it needed to do,
but it would only do it if I told it that, "yes, I know what I'm
doing".
I am definitely not encouraging anyone to try doing a full
crossgrade. Last time I poked this list about the need to eventually
switch to 64-bit, a few customers tried crossgrading and there was a
high incidence of disaster. I would not like to see that repeated.
Seriously, stop at the kernel unless you know what you're doing or
want a challenge and don't care if everything asplodes! 😀
Cheers,
Andy
