It might be worth talking to someone from the HacMan group (I can provide
some names) who moved wholesale from Google Groups to Discord. I *think*
they lost a single member over the change, but have, as a result, had some
extensive experience in setting it up to replace a "mailing list".

As far as I recall you do have to sign up (and unsubscribe) from the
web interface. Email interaction isn't the default mode, so you need
to create an account on a web site, log in to it, and then set it to
mailing list mode.
