Yes, anyone (in RIPE's area) can request PI space.
I assume as they have their own allocation that
BitFolk is a RIPE member.
Could you or would you consider registering PI netblocks for customers if
RIPE allowed it?
PI allocations need a sponsoring LIR (Local Internet Registry) in order
for them to remain in the RIPE database. In your scenario that would be
BitFolk. That would be fine, but:
- There is a per-allocation charge to the LIR for having PI allocations,
so we'd have to pass that on. I think the fee will be €25 per year:
https://www.ripe.net/about-us/news/review-independent-resources-to-prepare-…
- Your purpose for doing this is to be provider-independent, but you
may find it slightly more difficult to find another provider that will
both sponsor and route your own allocation.
A phrase you would look for is BYOIP (Bring Your Own IPs) which is
relatively common, it's just the aspect of sponsoring a PI allocation
which I am not sure about. It may be hard to find or expensive when
you do.
Becoming a LIR yourself currently costs €1,000 sign up and then each
year there is a membership fee which is altered yearly. In 2024 it was
€1,550. So first year is currently €2,550.
Thanks for that, Andy.
€25 per year would be ok, but not several thousand, and I take your
point that changing provider is still difficult.
I guess on a global level this doesn't really scale: putting a route in
the global routing table for every individual in the world who wants a
stable netblock is going to add an awful lot of routes.
Using the addresses provided by bitfolk gets me 95% of perfection: I can
give my hosts stable, routable, IPv6 addresses and be a rate tart to
mobile and fibre internet providers without worrying which providers do
IPv6, how they allocate addresses and if they do CGNAT. The only thing I
cant easily do is move on from Bitfolk, but since you've never given me
the slightest reason to want to, that's not a problem.
Cheers,
Simon.
Thanks,
Andy
