I think it would be brave to do a two dist-upgrades without checking
it's booting and working after the first. Things like the syntax of
configuration files change too often (the big one for me in upgrading
from Sarge was Postfix) and you can end up wondering which upgrade
broke things.
From what I've read Ubuntu seems to need
re-installing in order to
upgrade between versions safely.
On the desktop (netbook, anyway) it 'usually' works without
re-installing, but 'usually' isn't really good enough.
