that you're desperate for work.
OP is proposing to run a PHP app, not become a PHP developer.
I see plenty of people making happy lives earning money writing PHP
code though so I don't think the industry is doomed just yet.
If you have a bit of programming experience and
you're looking to
learn something new for fun then I'd recommend Google Go
(
http://golang.org) - which has excellent support for building web
applications.
Is there a good alternative to Roundcube but written in Go?
