Yes, that works - I have it running at home on a
squeeze-backport
(3.2.0-0.bpo.4-amd64) kernel now and a 3.7.1 from source.
I'll see if I can replicate this on my VPS (slightly different) and
take it from there.
Just to add the results of my bumblings - I am running the
3.2.0-0.bpo.4-686-pae successfully on my one VPS. Unfortunately the
stock ipset (2.5.0) is not supported by this kernel, so if you want to
stick with this version of ipset, you will have to modify the stock
kernel somehow. I did not want to go through all that pain, so I decided
to stick with the 3.2.0 kernel from squeeze-backports. The next gotcha
is that ipset 6.11/6.12 has not been backported to Squeeze yet, which
means you will have to roll your own. This is much less of an issue,
since all you will have to do is to compile ipset (and a few
dependencies), which is a far less weighty issue than building a kernel
on your VPS. I found that the only dependency needed by ipset is libmnl,
which is of course also not backported. So I did the (un)professional
thing and installed the two packages from source, and ipset seems to
work fine.
PS: I did try to build debs, but at 02:20 in the morning it's probably
fair to say sleep is a bit more important than trying to do my own
backports... ;-)
