That's possibly one of the best things I did last year.
It's a bit like growing your own vegetables. If you don't particularly
enjoy doing it, you shouldn't do it, as the alternatives are easier and
probably even cheaper.
I like running my own mail server and it's fairly hassle-free once set
up properly, but it wasn't exactly trivial and it's easy to do things
wrong and miss emails, or start spamming.
FWIW, I use Postfix and Dovecot and have set up both SPF and DKIM. I
have a professional interest in spam, so I don't filter much. I'm the
only user, so Mutt works fine for me.
