I think people tend to confuse this with "PTR
should match A".
I agree. Otherwise, you'd run into all sorts of difficulties where a mail
server is responsible for a number of domains and you desire it to be
referenced (through MX records) via a name unique to each domain.
The PTR record can only point to one of them and the others shouldn't be
expected to suffer as a result.
